Growing Your Own Vegetables Is Better

By Susanne Marra

In the last decade we have seen changes towards homogenized and mechanized farming using hormones, additives, herbicides and continued use of pesticides as well as synthetic fertilizers and mass production. These practices are noticeable affecting mans health. In addition new diseases are spreading between humans and animals like swine and bird flu.

The World Health Organization produces reports to show how the use of chemicals and other products on food, coupled with the manufacturing processes involved, are actually a threat for our health.

If you can manage the room for a few pots or even a small outdoor garden, it is a great idea to grow your own organic vegetable garden. Today I'm explaining seven reasons for doing this:

1. There will be no additives in your produce. Organic food associations has done research that suggests that additives in our vegetables can cause migraine, heart disease, osteoporosis and hyperactivity.

2. There will be no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers used. These chemical products are applied to obtain crops all the time regardless plagues or weather conditions, and affect the quality of the vegetables. Pesticides are poisonous to humans.

3. Your vegetables will not be genetically modified (GM). Antibiotics, drugs and hormones are used on vegetables to grow more and larger ones. One of the consequences of this practice are vegetables which look all the same and are usually tasteless. In the end we end up consuming the hormones that have been used on the vegetables, with the potential risks for our health.

4. It is much more healthy for you to eat your own organic vegetables that you have grown. This way you can be sure your vegetables will not contain any of the chemicals listed, and you can bet they will be much healthier than anything you could find in the local market. You will not have to be worried that you are hurting your health since you will know you did not add anything unnatural to your produce.

5. Growing your own organic vegetables will provide you with much more tasty vegetables. Using pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones and antibiotics cause vegetables to grow in an unnatural way and hurt the taste as well. Organic vegetables will enhance your cooking as they tend to have much better flavor.

6. By farming organically you will be being friendly to the environment. By not using pesticides and other terribly harmful chemicals on your produce, there will be no not harm the soil or the environment from the chemical components.

7. By growing your own organic produce you contribute to your own self-sustainability and that of the planet. Small groups have been formed whose members exchange the produce they grow. This helps to create a friendly environment and makes it a better place for everyone.

Eating organic products just means that you don't add anything to them that they would not naturally have. As you can guess, additives, fertilizers, pesticides or hormones are not ingredients of naturally grown food. To enjoy better health, try growing your own organic vegetables in some small pots on your patio.
