Using Door Flood Barriers To Safeguard Your House

By Ben Pate

Flood Panels can be used to help reduce the amount of damage your home takes when in there is a flood. They can be used to offer a level of protection from water damage and can assist in keeping the water from entering your home. Many of these flood barriers can be assembled very quickly and can be put into place when they are needed.

One of the main areas you want to protect is your doors. These often are the weakest part of the house during a flood. You can choose from many types and styles of barriers to keep the water out. You will need to determine the type you want based on your physical capabilities, the amount of time it would take for you to implement them, and the flood danger itself.

One of the ways in which you can keep water out is with waterproof doors. You can choose to have a door that has an inflatable gasket around it that can be pumped up by hand or with an air compressor. These tend to cover the whole side of the door and can still allow it to close properly. You can also buy a door that is made as watertight and offers no adjustable gasket to it.

You may also choose to go with a barrier that is placed on the outside of the door. You can choose to have the frame permanently installed and have the barrier go into place as needed. This type often will only cover part of the door slightly past the projected flood line. It does come in different sizes to accommodate the door width.

When you decide on these barriers, you should also remember to get one for your garage. These are just like the ones for the doors and will install in the same way. If you have a patio or walkway, then you may want a portable barrier for those to help block water from getting into these areas as well.

For the windows, you can use glass flood barriers. These replace the windows with a flexible glass that will not shatter under the pressure from floodwalls. They are designed to have some seepage with them, for safety, and therefore are not watertight.

Aluminum barriers can also be a great defense against flooding. These are plates of metal that have a welded frame which are assembled to cover the entire perimeter of the house. While these give the best, and most, protection to your home, Residential Flood Barriers are also cost prohibitive to most people, and the installation can be extremely difficult.
